Twenty years ago, Aleksandra Jovanić defended her master’s thesis in the arts, Digital Dreams. A short dialogue from the film 2010: The Year We Make Contact, the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, between SAL (HAL’s sister) and Dr. Chandra, a computer scientist, inspired this piece:
SAL 9000: “Will I dream?”
Dr. Chandra: “Of course you will. All intelligent creatures dream. Nobody knows why. Perhaps you will dream of HAL, just as I often do.”
From this point, Jovanić asked herself: if computers can dream, what would they dream of? In this work, she returns to the theme of dream archetypes, which she had briefly touched upon at the time of her thesis. On one hand, she traces parallels between human archetypes from psychology and art history; on the other, she explores typical computer algorithms, which she regards as their analogues
