INVENTION OF OPTICAL DEVICES
Notable events in the history of animation include the discovery of optical devices in the nineteenth century, which in various ways allow static images to give the appearance of movement.
As stated in every history of motion pictures, our capacity to discern movement in a succession of static images is dependent on the persistence of vision, an imperfection of human eyes in which an image is maintained on the retina for a tenth of a second. This effect allows us to see linked 24 pictures as a continuous movement.
